May 2025 Newsletter

Monday 14th April and the Village Hall Trustees held the Annual General Meeting, following the 31st March financial year end, thank you to all who attended. The AGM afforded the opportunity for the Trustees to provide updates on the change in legal status of the Charity, the state of finances, and important milestones achieved over the last twelve months.

The Chair, Janet Earl, reported that the Trustees have been able to undertake much improvement at the Hall, supported by Local Government and other Grants, and this is clearly visible in the enhanced facilities: newly refurbished toilets, club room upgrade and much improved access security as demanded for user safeguarding.

The failure of the Hall’s heating boiler in November significantly blighted the year and the Trustees are very grateful to all those who rallied to support the installation of the new boiler, both practically and financially. Final cost of the new boiler installation and necessary upgrades was almost £22,000 and the Trustees acknowledge the massive support of Silchester Parish Council and donors in helping the Trustees get over this enormous setback.

Minutes of the AGM will shortly be available on the Village Hall Website.

On a lighter note, March heralded the hosting of the Trustees’ major fundraising event which was the Celebration of Spring event. Special thanks are due to Peter Allison and his team of helpers who work tirelessly to make these Dining Events so successful and now a Silchester “must do” calendar event! Just over £4,200 was raised for Hall funds from the event, which featured an auction that included a riverboat cruise on the Thames as one of the lots !

Upcoming Events at the Hall can be found on the Website at https://silchestervillagehall.org.uk/events/ and the Trustees would love to see you at the VE Day events taking place on 4th and 8th May, details of which can be found elsewhere in the magazine.

Don’t forget to book your tickets for the Village Hall fundraiser talk “The Dambusters” given by our County Councillor and war historian Rhydian Vaughan. The details for this are at https://silchestervillagehall.org.uk/the-dambusters-a-talk-by-rhydian-vaughan-mbe/
