Hall Update
We have implemented the new WIFI system, which is so much easier to use. The hall is now fully covered with a single WIFI, so no need to swap and change from room to room. Details of how to connect to it are displayed in the foyer of both the main rooms.
Silchester Village Hall Charity Incorporation.
Silchester Village Hall is currently registered as an unincorporated charity with the Charity Commission (CC), which places obligations and risk personally on the trustees (covered by insurance) and limits what the charity can do in terms of placing contracts and employing people. The charity should be a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). The main benefits of this form are that the charity has a legal personality (the ability to enter contracts, sue and be sued, and to hold property in its own name – rather than personally in the name of its trustees), and its trustees have limited liability.
The proposal is to have a Foundation CIO with two classes of member. The first class is the Member Trustees who run the charity and the second is the Member Residents who appoint the Trustees at the AGM and approve any major changes to its constitution etc.. This matches the existing governance document.
The Balcony Project
The Balcony project for the Village Hall has stalled due to covid and self-imposed spending restrictions. The next stage is to get the structural calculations done which would enable us to get some estimates for the cost of the work.
Scope: The project envisages removing the upright supports for the balcony in the main hall and providing external storage for tables and chairs. This greatly increases the usable area (capacity) of the hall, particularly for activities such as dance events and sit-down dining functions. It also makes the hall more attractive for hirers from the point of view of not having furniture storage at the back of the room.
We are looking at two options for storage outside the current structure, both of which necessitate the building of double doors under the end of the balcony to allow easy access for tables and chairs and their storage frames.
Thanks to all those who came to lend a hand on the Big Help Out volunteering day on 8th May, the place looks more tidy and smarter outside as a result. If you want to get involved in volunteering to keep this local facility looking smart, just let us know.
